How to Host Your Own Vigil
  1. Organize a location. Approach a church, business or organization you have a relationship with.  Or, try a local park.  You may need to get a permit.
  2. When you have a time and place organized, send a press release to your local papers and newsletters.  Make sure to send it to us and we will put it in our newsletter.
  3. Do you want a practioner to talk about services available to people in domestic violence situations?  Find a local service organization, like the Domestic Violence Resource Center, in your area to have a representative available at the vigil.
  4. Do you want a speaker for your vigil?  Try asking local politicians, clergy, or other involved community leaders who are informed about the issue of domestic violence.  Even if it's not a fit for your local politicians, clergy members, and other community leaders, you might consider sending them an invitation to attend.
  5. Depending on the size of your vigil, you may need to rent a sound system or canopy.
  6. If you choose to order candles or ribbons you can order a Vigil Kit through the Domestic Violence Resource Center.  Each vigil is different, depending on the focus and who is attending. Some vigils have as a focus the lighting of candles, which is usually accompanied by a moment of silence or prayer.  You can also include messages of hope and inspiration from community members and domestic violence survivors.
  7. Consider handing out flyers with ways for people to get involved after the vigil concludes, and important contact information of agencies that help survivors.
